Getting To Long Island, The Bahamas
Long Island, The Bahamas has two airports:
(SML) Stella Maris Airport, located in the northern part of Long Island.
(LGI) Deadmans’ Cay Airport, located in the southern part of Long Island.
The two airports are approximately 48 miles apart.
If you and your party will be staying in the northern district, fly into Stella Maris and if your stay is based in the southern part of Long Island fly into Deadmans Cay. But no worries there are taxi and car rental services available.
Daily scheduled flight service between Nassau and Long Island is available. Private charter services can also be arranged.
When flying into Long Island, most likely you will be catching a connecting flight in Nassau, New Providence, then on to flying into Long Island.
To avoid overnight stay in Nassau, New Providence, make sure to book your reservations with enough time, about 2 hours, to clear customs in Nassau and to catch your connecting domestic flight. Domestic Flight Check-In usually closes 45 minutes to 1hour before your flight carrier’s departure into Long Island.
When you get into Nassau you will have to collect your baggage from international and proceed to customs for clearance. After that is done you will shuttle over to the domestic flight departure terminal. The shuttle departs every 15 minutes between terminals. If you need help ask the attendants at the international departure lounge.

Nationals of the European Union DO NOT require a visa to enter The Bahamas. This includes travellers having the nationality of and holding a passport issued by the UK, Ireland, France, Spain, Portugal, Germany, Austria, Belgium, Italy, Greece, etc.
All applications must be made in person and in advance in a Bahamas High Commission or Embassy. As such The Bahamas Tourist Offices in Europe and Asia are unable to assist with detailed information and advice on requirements, processing time and fees regarding the issuance of visa. Travelers - What You Need To Know Upon Entry To The Bahamas
Upon entering The Bahamas, all travelers are required to present the following:
- A valid passport with six months validity from the date of departure from The Bahamas;
- A return or onward ticket if flying by commercial carrier.
- Travel vouchers or passbooks for passengers travelling by commercial cruise ships.
- Sufficient funds to finance the visit (approx. US$200 per day);
- A letter of invitation if residing at a private address;
- A confirmed hotel booking if applicable.

Upon arriving in The Islands of the Bahamas, everyone must fill out and sign an Immigration card, keeping a portion of the card safe until departing.
Before leaving The Islands of the Bahamas, be sure to surrender your copy of the Immigration Card at the airport or at the last Bahamian port you visit.

Most visitors to The Bahamas do not need special vaccinations before entering the country. However, travellers over one year of age must provide a valid yellow fever vaccination certificate if they are coming from the following countries: Angola, Benin, Bolivia, Brazil, Burkina Faso, Colombia, Cameroon, Democratic Republic of Congo, Ecuador, French Guiana, Gabon, Ghana, Guinea, Liberia, Nigeria, Sierra Leone, Peru and Sudan.
Travelling with pets
If you wish to travel with your pet, an import permit is required for all animals being brought into The Bahamas. Applications for these permits must be made in advance of your arrival, in writing to the Ministry of Agriculture and Marine Resources in Nassau. Customs duty and fees may apply.
